Aqua-Lotl FAQ
Welcome to the Aqua-Lotl FAQ! We want your axolotl journey to be smooth and stress-free.
Here are answers to some of our most common questions.
Do you ship axolotls?
Yes, we ship to most U.S. states where axolotls are legal. Please make sure to check your state and local laws before placing an order. We currently do not ship to California, New Jersey, Maine, or New Mexico due to state restrictions. Learn More Here.
How are axolotls shipped?
We use overnight shipping to ensure your axolotl arrives safely and quickly. Each axolotl is packed in insulated containers with cold or heat packs as needed, depending on your local weather. Shipping occurs Monday through Wednesday to avoid weekend delays. Learn More Here.
What is your Live Arrival Guarantee?
If your axolotl arrives dead or in poor condition, please email us at [your email] within 2 hours of delivery with clear photos. We will offer a replacement or refund, depending on availability. Learn More Here.
What size tank do I need?
We recommend a minimum of 20 gallons for a single axolotl. However, we prefer 29- or 40-gallon tanks for long-term health and stability. Larger tanks make it easier to maintain proper water conditions. Learn More Here.
Can axolotls live with other fish?
We do not recommend housing axolotls with other species. Fish may nip at the axolotl’s gills or be eaten. The safest setup is one axolotl per tank, or multiple axolotls of the same size and sex. Learn More Here.
Do I need a heater?
No! Axolotls prefer cool water. Their ideal range is 60–65°F, and anything over 70°F can cause stress or illness. Use a fan, room AC, or frozen water bottles if your home runs warm.
What should I feed my axolotl?
Feed your axolotl based on age:
0–3 months: Baby brine shrimp, daphnia
3–6 months: Blackworms, white worms, pellets, small earthworm bits
6+ months: Earthworms, Repashy Grub Pie, sinking pellets
Feeding frequency varies: daily for juveniles, every 2–3 days for adults.
My axolotl isn’t eating — what should I do?
Axolotls can go on short hunger strikes, especially when stressed or adjusting to new environments. Always test your water parameters first. Poor water quality is the most common reason axolotls stop eating.
Where can I buy black worms?
You can find black worms for sale on these sites: Premium Live Blackworms, calmingpets & Eastern Aquatics
